Sharks Chairman Barry Pierce resigns, Don Anderson stands down

Please be advised that Sharks Chairman Barry Pierce last night gave notice that he would resign his position with the Cronulla Sutherland Leagues and District Football clubs at the end of June.

Don Anderson, a current member of the Sharks Board of Directors and a former Vice President at the club, has also stood down, with his resignation effective immediately.

Last night’s meeting was the first for the new board which was elected by a vote of the members last week.

Mr Pierce, who has been Chairman at the Sharks since 1999 and has enjoyed a 21-year association with the club, released the following statement in relation to his resignation.

“I wish to tender my resignation from the Cronulla Sutherland Leagues and District Football clubs, to become effective 30-6-2009. Until that time I will assist the new board in any capacity I can,” Mr Pierce said.

“This decision has not been taken lightly and has been a very difficult one. I would like to thank everyone who has supported me over the past 20 years, especially my family. I would also like to thank the people I have worked with for making my time at the Sharks most enjoyable.

“I wish the new Board, Tony Zappia, Ricky Stuart, the Sharks football team and everyone associated with the club every success in the future.”

Despite stepping aside at the Sharks Mr Pierce will continue a heavy involvement with rugby league as a member of the NSWRL, ARL and NRL boards.

In relation to his resignation, Mr Anderson, a Director for 12 years, indicated that while he was standing down from his board position he was still firmly committed to the Sharks.

“I am not going to walk away from the club, I’ll still be around as an ardent Sharks supporter,” Mr Anderson said. “I’ve certainly enjoyed my time on the Board but am happy to hand over the responsibilities to some new faces and younger members and I wish them the best in taking the club forward.”

It should be made known that both Mr Pierce and Mr Anderson acted without any boardroom pressure and of their own accord, with the Sharks Board accepting Pierce’s intention and Anderson’s resignation with regret. The Board also noted the lengthy service that both had given to the Cronulla club.

Last night the new Board endorsed the decision of the former Board to hold a Special Meeting before the end of July, at which time they will put to that meeting whether the members feel another election is warranted and necessary.

The Board is moving to fill the position vacated by Mr Anderson immediately, and will endorse a replacement at its next meeting on 16 June.

When Mr Pierce’s resignation becomes effective at the end of the month a new Chairman will be elected by the existing Board.

Queensland eye a six-year dynasty
As Queensland begins its quest for a historic fourth successive series win at Melbourne's Etihad Stadium tonight, some within the Maroons bunker believe the state's dominance of NSW could continue for years. Arthur Beetson claims the Maroons could stretch their winning sequence to an unprecedented six series. A glance of the Maroons' squad suggests it's not without merit. Of the star-studded backline, only captain Darren Lockyer is edging towards the end of his career. Players such as Greg Inglis, Darius Boyd and Israel Folau could spend another decade in the Queensland team.

It is about what is between the ears - Meninga

Harvey Norman Women in League
As well as kicking off the 2009 Harvey Norman State of Origin Series, Melbourne will tomorrow night play host to the first of the Harvey Norman Women in League events for the year.

More than 100 female volunteers and employees will gather with Melbourne Storm stars and NRL Chief Executive David Gallop at the Intercontinental Hotel before heading off to Etihad Stadium for the Harvey Norman State of Origin match between New South Wales and Queensland.

The night is the first of four Harvey Norman Women in League functions for the year and will pay tribute to the efforts of women who have been at the heart of the game’s development in Victoria.

One such woman is Selma Smith, who has dedicated more than 30 years to growing the game in Victoria, most recently as President of the Waverley Oakleigh Panthers with more than 750 junior and senior Rugby League players under her care.

“It’s been hard work establishing this game here but nothing beats the atmosphere at a Rugby League match,” she said.

Mr Gallop said the game’s One Community Program and Harvey Norman were committed to seeing the efforts of women in the game acknowledged.

“Women are often the backbone of the game from the grassroots right through to the Telstra Premiership level,” he said.

“From volunteers, coaches, full time development officers and Telstra Premiership support staff, to senior executives, journalists and board members, women are a part of the game’s success at every level.

“One Community has developed professional and volunteer awards to encourage more women to be a part of the game and help recognise the efforts of those who play such a key role at present.

“The Women in League events are designed to bring women in the game together, to say thank you and to inspire others to take part.”

The three remaining Women in League functions will be in Sydney on Tuesday, June 9, Brisbane on June 11 and the NSW Central Coast on June 17.

Big Artie should lead Roosters
The Roar - The appointment of Roosters legend Arthur Beetson to become assistant coach at the Bondi Junction club is a step in the right direction for a side struggling to find the necessary attitude and belief to climb off the bottom of the NRL ladder. Wigan to honour Billy Boston
One of the stands at the JJB Stadium is to be named after a Wigan rugby legend. And while who exactly will be honoured is being kept secret for now, Billy Boston looks like the odds-on favourite.
Mr Whelan disclosed the plan as he talked about the changes that will take place at the ground this summer when it becomes the DW Stadium. It faces a major overhaul with the current venue sponsor's name to be seen everywhere - not just on giant signs on high but also on walls, etched into glass, printed on stationery and of course highly visible on three of the four stands' seats.
