Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure

McRae's Hull out to put record straight at Wigan

Independent: We might have the Winter Olympics to thank for the revised schedule, but the Challenge Cup could scarcely come out of cold storage with a better double bill than today's two televised ties. Hull return to Wigan 10 days after being thrashed there in a friendly, but their coach, Shaun McRae, regards that as irrelevant. "We went there with a poor attitude – very negative,'' he said. Those involved will prefer to look back on the play-off game at the JJB last September, when Hull went so close without being able to end their long wait for a win at Wigan

NZRL Foundation forced to re-structure

NZH: The New Zealand Rugby League has been forced to restructure its development foundation - and to drop permanent staff from the payroll - after predicted profits from investment in gaming fell wildly short. The foundation, a partnership set up between the old Auckland Warriors and the NZRL, had eight regional development officers last year. Four were in Auckland and the others in Northland, Manawatu, Wellington and Tasman (Nelson/Marlborough). The league wants to keep as many involved as possible, and will contract out regional development programmes in the regions and ask districts to seek more money from sponsors, local government and regional sports trusts

Super League plan to embrace the French

Independent: Super League clubs are to consider introducing a midseason competition involving French teams to replace the extra fixtures that flesh out the calendar. The Rugby League's implementation board will today debate a proposal from St Helens for a new tournament to occupy a similar position in the season to the old Regal Trophy. At present, clubs play each other home and away, plus six extra games to comprise a total of 28. One alternative is that the 12 Super League clubs should be divided into four groups, with a French side or possibly in one case a South African team, in each of them. They would play in League competitions with the four winners going into semi-finals and the final. "There are some good teams in France now, so why not try it,'' said Kelly, who believes he has support from other Super League clubs

The boys are back in town

SMH: Back at his old stomping ground of Cessnock for yesterday's launch of the National Rugby League's Country Carnival, Andrew Johns was reminiscing. Returning to a place filled with fond childhood memories can have that effect, but it wasn't just that he and elder brother Matthew grew up across the road from the old showground and used to spend most afternoons there honing their considerable football skills. "It doesn't matter what year it is, I always look forward to playing, and especially this year", the Newcastle captain said

Gateshead 's future in doubt

Sporting Life: The future of rugby league's north east outpost, Gateshead Thunder, is in grave doubt after the Northern Ford Premiership strugglers suffered a double blow on Friday. Following the axing of coach Andy Kelly and 15 Yorkshire-based players, the cash-strapped Tynesiders have now been hit by the resignation of chairman Steve Worsnop and the withdrawal of major backers Kicks Leisure. Former Thunder Academy coach Rob Jones is also set to step down only days after being unveiled as Kelly's replacement

Burleigh Bears include five PBC boys in squad

GC Bulletin: Five players from Palm Beach-Currumbin's triumphant national schoolboys' rugby league team are included in the Burleigh Bears' Queensland Cup squad to take on Norths Devils in a trial at Pizzey Park next Saturday. Coach Rick Stone said although his squad had been in solid training for three months it was difficult to predict how they would perform under match conditions "I think we have recruited pretty well plus we have good quality in the youngsters who have come through our grades, we will be as competitive as we have been in recent seasons. We have had about 70 at training, including our under-19 footballers, and they have been working well. We have another trial for two teams against the Clydesdales at Toowoomba on Friday, February 22." said Stone

Terzis tips Challenge Cup upset

Teamtalk: Leigh coach Paul Terzis has predicted that an NFP side will upset the odds and reach the last four of this year's Challenge Cup. The Centurions provided one of the biggest upsets of last year's tournament when they knocked out Super League side Salford in the fourth round, and Terzis believes that the stage is set for a lower division side to do even better this year

Ikin to out for the year

Courier Mail: Broncos and State of Origin star Ben Ikin is unlikely to play a game this year. The former Test five-eighth returned from the Broncos' training camp in Fiji yesterday resigned to another frustrating season of rehabilitation from a crippling knee injury, "There's a possibility I won't play this season and it's a big possibility,The doctors have basically told me it's an eight to nine month thing so at this stage I'm looking at July and beyond. But I'm remaining optimistic" Ikin said yesterday

Sheffield Eagles prepare for biggest game in their history

Ananova: Sheffield Eagles are preparing for the biggest game in their three-year history, when they take on Wakefield Trinity Wildcats in the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Challenge Cup. They will face their former captain Paul Broadbent, who led the Eagles' predecessors to Challenge Cup victory in 1998. Sheffield then merged with Huddersfield, before splitting again three years ago. Sheffield's marketing and media chief Angie Gregory told Ananova.com: ''The Wakefield game will be our first real test. It will be our biggest game since the new Eagles started". she said

Annesley promoted

Sportal: Just days after beating him to the post of chief executive at the NRL, David Gallop has appointed Graham Annesley chief operating officer of the League

Leeds will be a tougher assignment than Newcastle Knights - Paul

Teamtalk:Bradford's Robbie Paul has suggested that tomorrow's Challenge Cup tie with Leeds may be tougher than last week's victory over Newcastle Knights

Is talk of expanding the WCC a case of too much too soon

Total RL: John Drake believes talk of expanding the World Club Challenge after Bradford's victory over Newcastle Knights is a case of too much too soon. Say what you like about Maurice Lindsay - and many people do. His latest idea is that the World Club Challenge should be expanded to include the top four clubs from Super League and the NRL in a play-off format leading up to a final clash, rather than the one-off match between the two domestic champion clubs we have now. Following Bradford's victory over Newcastle Knights in this year's event which despite being played out in appalling weather, drew a crowd of 21,113 in Huddersfield, it would be easy to get carried away with the instant appeal of such an idea

Gallop and board back radical anti-tampering proposals

SMH: New National Rugby League chief executive David Gallop faces his first test next week when he tries to convince players and their representatives to accept a ban on all mid-season negotiations and the registration of offers by clubs. The NRL board yesterday backed the radical changes to the player-transfer system and with clubs also supporting the proposals, Gallop's task is to implement them in time for the upcoming season. The moves would see the anti-tampering deadline pushed back from June30 to midnight on grand final day, which this year is set down for October 5. Clubs and players would then have a limited period - likely to be two weeks - to complete negotiations, during which time all offers would have to be lodged with the NRL. They would then be verified when contracts are registered

NRL confirms Northern Eagles support

SMH: The NRL board confirmed its support for the Northern Eagles during the four-hour meeting at Gosford. Northern Eagles chief executive Ian Thomson outlined the club's progress under the control of the Manly club. He reaffirmed the Northern Eagles' intention to work closely with the Central Coast community. NRL Chairman Malcolm Noad said "There's no doubting the club's commitment to the Central Coast, the board sees it as extremely important that Telstra Premiership matches are being played at NorthPower Stadium. Given the clear reality that the game cannot sustain further expansion, the Northern Eagles remain a vital link between the Central Coast and the Telstra PremiershipNRL". he said yesterday

NFP Challenge Cup Games Preview

RL Fans: Stan Townsend previews the Northern Ford Premiership club’s contribution to this weekend’s Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Challenge Cup fourth round toes and a Premiership fixture

NRL may take heed of a Bennett's suggestion

Brisbane: Following Wayne Bennett’s recent criticism, the National Rugby League board on Thursday may have considered a proposal for a dramatic overhaul of the player transfer system, which will require clubs to register any contract offer with the League

Ryan Sheridan's place in danger to Rob Burrow

Independent: The Leeds coach, Daryl Powell, is pondering who should play scrum-half in the Challenge Cup-tie at Bradford on Saturday. The Great Britain international, Ryan Sheridan, is still regarded as the club's first choice, but the 19-year-old Rob Burrow has been outstanding in pre-season games. "That's obviously the burning question in our team, whether Rob is good enough to start in front of Ryan,'' Powell said

NFP Focus: Is it worth finishing top

Total RL: Martyn Sadler, the editor of Rugby League Express, reflects on the format of this season's Northern Ford Premiership play-off system. The format of this season's Northern Ford Premiership play-offs is already causing some controversy. Following the top-eight play-offs that the competition has embraced for the last two seasons, a new, top-nine format has been introduced to decide the NFP Champions for the 2002 season

Ricky Stuart rests Rooster's stars

Sportal: Roosters coach Ricky Stuart has named a below-strength line-up for the team’s opening trial game, with the team’s stars expected to return later to meet the Broncos. Sydney plays a combined Group 2/3 representative side in Coffs Harbour next weekend, with Stuart opting to rest Brad Fittler and Paul Green, while Broncos recruit Justin Hodges an Craig Wing will play in the match

Julian O'Neill starts with Wigan on Saturday

Sporting Life: Julian O'Neill hits the Challenge Cup trail with Wigan on Saturday with a hint of regret that it no longer leads to Wembley. The former NQ Cowboys utility , who will make his Wigan debut in the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Challenge Cup fourth-round tie against Hull, can vividly recall the unique atmosphere of a Wembley final after playing for Widnes, ironically against Wigan, in front of the famous Twin Towers nine years ago

Cessnock trial is a Andrew Johns' highlight

news.com.au The Charity Shield clash between a re-born South Sydney and St George Illawarra quite rightly ranks as the pre-season main course for rugby league fans hungry for some action. The game is already a sellout at the Sydney Football Stadium on February 16 and will be televised live on Channel 9 and FOX Sports. But it is not the only NRL trial creating interest in the countdown to the premiership. Andrew Johns claims his return to his hometown of Cessnock with the Knights taking on Penrith on March 2 will be one of the highlights of the year for him

NRL considers transfer overhaul

Courier Mail: The National Rugby League board will consider a proposal for a dramatic overhaul of the player transfer system today which will require clubs to register any contract offer with the league. The proposal runs in tandem with moving the anti-tampering deadline from June 30 to midnight of grand final day and establishing a two-week trading period. These measures are being considered given the negative publicity generated when players sign with a rival club mid-season and the damaging effect it has on fan loyalty

Shaun McRae calls for Challenge Cup change

Teamtalk: Hull's director of rugby Shaun McRae believes that the Challenge Cup needs restructuring as it comes too early in the season. McRae has called for a revamp of The Challenge Cup as his side prepare for Wigan on Saturday. The coach reckons that the timing of the competition does not allow his players and those at other clubs to be properly fit and ready to play in such a high-profile competition

Northern Eagles will wear a new, Manly-style jersey

SMH: The Northern Eagles will wear a new, Manly-style jersey this season. Gone is the red and black that featured among the Eagles' colours during the failed joint venture with North Sydney - the new jersey being predominantly maroon with white down the sides and accompanied by two blue stripes and a blue collar. Officially, it is the Eagles' alternative jersey but the club plans to use it in every match

Monty Betham Captain of NZ Warriors

NZH: Hooker Monty Betham has been named captain of the New Zealand Warriors for this year's National Rugby League (NRL) competition. Betham, 23, replaces last year's co-captains, club stalwart Stacey Jones and Australian hardman Kevin Campion. Betham's elevation to lead the side was announced by Prime Minister Helen Clark at a Warriors open day at Ericsson Stadium on Wednesday . Betham "It's an honour and a privilege to be named captain," he said

Bradford looking to win every match in 2002

Ananova: Bradford Bulls have set themselves a target of winning every match in 2002. As the newly-crowned world club champions prepare for Saturday's showdown with arch rivals Leeds in the fourth round of the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Challenge Cup, assistant coach Karl Harrison revealed their grand-slam ambitions. "It's probably an unrealistic target because there is a lot of competition this year but it's a goal we've set". he said

Ben Elias heads ticket that aims for West Tigers board takeover

SMH: Former Balmain great Ben Elias is heading a ticket aimed at taking over the club's board and ending the Wests Tigers joint venture at the coming annual general elections. Elias has recruited a high-profile team of businessmen to form the Black and Gold team, which is also endorsing his former Tigers and Australian teammate Paul Sironen and ex-director Leslie Glen in a bid to oust all six current board members

Malcolm White quits Swinton

Malcolm White has carried out his threat to quit as chairman of Swinton Lions after 10 years in the job. The news puts a question mark over Swinton's future at Bury's Gigg Lane ground unless new investments can be attracted. White made his decision after a crowd of only 206 for last week's Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Challenge Cup third-round win over Hull amateurs Skirlaugh

Peter Roe impressed with Wakefield youth

Teamtalk: Wildcats coach Peter Roe [pictured] is unlikely to field the Wakefield apprentices in this week's cup clash but has said that they will figure this season. Roe has already given some of The Wildcats' young guns a blast at The Boulevard and against Leeds Rhinos last time out. But those were friendly fixtures; the games ahead now start to count

Some Latest NRL Betting Information

Gerald Daffy Centrebet Manager said outright NRL favouritism is between the Brisbane and Parramatta and it would not be decided until the Broncos halfback Allan Langer decided on his proposed comeback. [RLCM rates Parramatta outright favourites to win the Premiership with the Broncos third pick behind the Newcastle Knights.] The New Zealand Warriors have firmed noticeably from $26 into $21. [RLCM rates NZ price by Centrebet well under the odds.] While the West Tigers have emerged a popular wooden spoon bet coming in from $6 to $4.50 to finish 2002 in last place
