By James Buckley - They were muddied, bloodied and almost unrecognisable at full-time. But not even the horrendous conditions could dampen Belconnen United's spirit after emerging 28-14 victors in yesterday's major semi-final against the Queanbeyan Kangaroos. The Scholars are the first team through to the Canberra Raiders Cup grand final and as the siren sounded yesterday, they celebrated like they'd just won the premiership.

It was an 80-minute slog at Northbourne Oval which at times looked more like trench warfare than a game of rugby league.

There was plenty of dropped ball and big hits, but ultimately the Scholars' robust defence was the difference.

They led 12-8 at half-time but Queanbeyan reclaimed control immediately after the break when Troy Whiley scooted over from dummy half.

But despite running into an almost gale force wind, Belconnen United responded with three tries to close out the game which coach John Hawke said illustrated his side's tremendous character.

''The last fortnight we really knuckled down about the attitude in defence and a bit more pride in our line and they showed that,'' Hawke said.
