By Jess Webster - Brothers coach Moses Wigness has a Darwin rugby league grand final to look forward to next weekend. Brothers will have a shot at defending their title after powering away to a 38-22 win against a gallant Palmerston at Richardson Park on Saturday night.
The game was in the balance when Will Beers crossed the line to give the Raiders the lead late in the second half but the Brethren's experience prevailed to score the final three tries of the match.
Brothers coach Moses Wigness says going back to basics when Palmerston led 22-20 ultimately got his side home in the end.
"Palmerston was always going to be tough, theyre a young bunch of boys and they'll run all day," he said.
"When they hit the lead there was still 12 minutes left on the clock, and I just sent the message out to the boys to just calm it down, go back to the basics which we did.
"We completed a couple of sets, which we talked about (doing) during the week, and that's what got us back. That's what wins you big games."
In a close first half Brothers drew first blood after just four minutes of play, but Palmerston was never far behind trailing by only six points at the break.
Daniel Good extended the Brethren's lead through the second half until Jaiden Taniwha and Beers combined to give the Raiders a sniff at an upset victory.
But the Raiders lost possession on the next set of six and Danny Miskin capitalised to turn the match in Brothers' favour.
Wigness knows their biggest test comes against Nightcliff in what shapes as a blockbuster grand final next weekend.
"We are still 80 mins away from doing it (winning the premiership) so we're not going to get too far ahead of ourselves," he said.
"From last week's effort to this week's effort, it's a big turnaround for us and were heading in the right direction."
