By Peter Badel - Brisbane coach Ivan Henjak has urged his troops to play for the club's pride tonight against Canberra with the class of 2010 just 80 minutes away from the shame of becoming the worst Broncos outfit in history. Underlining the desperation engulfing the Broncos, halfback Peter Wallace will take the biggest gamble of his career when he attempts to rescue Brisbane's season with a damaged shoulder that requires reconstructive surgery.
But even the playmaking guile of Wallace may not be enough to save Henjak's squad from the ignominy of completing 2010 as the worst performed side in the Broncos' glittering history.
Should the 10th-placed Broncos fail to beat the Raiders at Suncorp Stadium, they will finish with 11 wins, equalling Wayne Bennett's 2007 squad for the fewest victories by a Brisbane team in a season.
But the 2007 team managed to scrape into the finals in eighth place with 11 wins and a draw, an achievement that places it ahead of the 2010 Broncos unless Henjak's team makes the finals.
The three Broncos teams to have missed the finals all possessed superior win-loss records and finished seventh or above. Brisbane's 1988-89 outfits each posted 14 wins, while the class of 1991, the last Broncos side to miss the playoffs, finished seventh with 13.
Henjak urged his side to walk off against the Raiders with no regrets.
"If this doesn't motivate them nothing will," said Henjak, who is aware his side must win by at least 15 points tonight to have any hope of making the top eight.
"They are playing for their lives, a position in the semis, possibly their last home game in front of their fans.
"We're not worried about the 15 (point margin) or the winning, we just want to go out there with our heads held high and the fans feeling good about their team and the effort they've put in."
As revealed by The Courier-Mail, Wallace was yesterday ushered into the Broncos line-up for the must-win game - just 48 hours after being given next to no hope of playing again this season.
Rookie five-eighth Corey Norman will make way for Wallace, who successfully completed the Broncos' final training session.
Wallace pleaded to be picked after receiving specialist advice that his battered right shoulder cannot sustain any further damage.
But he will be a minute-by-minute proposition at Suncorp Stadium and he is bracing for a brutal attack from Canberra's monster pack led by front-row hitmen Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, Dane Tilse, David Shillington and Scott Logan.
"My shoulder is pretty much stuffed," Wallace said yesterday.
"It's not a pain thing, it's pretty much torn and I need a reconstruction.
"If we weren't a chance of making it (the finals), I probably wouldn't have played, but the team comes first.
"It was looking pretty bleak on Saturday, it was still pretty sore, but come Sunday and Monday I started to get some movement back in it.
"I'm sure they (the Raiders) will be looking for me (in defence) but that's something I need to deal with."
Henjak is adamant he can withstand an 80-minute Raiders onslaught.
"There shouldn't be any restrictions on him, he'll wear a brace and be right to go," Henjak said. |
