Selby Warriors ARLC will get an early test of their division three credentials when they kick off the Pennine League season on Saturday. The Warriors, promoted as division four champions, begin at home to Odsal Sedbergh (2.30pm), who finished third in the higher tier last season to only just miss out on promotion to division two.

Selby, again coached by Paul Helstrip, with Matthew Stevenson assisting, will also have to contend with the loss of Ben Pearson, a key player, who has joined division one East outfit Dearne Valley Bulldogs.

Warriors spokesman Dave Sowden said: "We got relegated from the third division two seasons ago so are hoping this time to make a better fist of things.

"We have lost a few players from for one reason or another and a massive loss is Ben Pearson, but the club have also picked up some quality replacements."

The Warriors will again run a second team, stacked with youngsters, who will play in division seven. Their first game is at Wetherby Bulldogs. Anyone interested in playing rugby league will get a chance in the second team.

Training has been well attended with 25 regulars but, with two teams to fill, more players would be welcome. Training is on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7pm to 8.30pm, at the Foxhill Lane fields.

Selby have agreed a unique sponsorship deal with Webster's wood-yard in Burn. The Warriors' ground will now be known as The Webster Timber Foxhill Sports Ground.
